Kenyan Richard Limo caused a surprise by taking the men's 5000m gold.
Limo sprinted past Algerian Ali Saidi Sief with 150m to go and never looked
back to win in 13.00.77.
Saidi-Sief looked stunned as he glanced across at the Kenyan, but he hung on
to win silver in 13.02.16 ahead of Olympic champion Million Wolde (13.03.47)
of Ethiopia.
Limo's team-mate Sammy Kipketer had made all the early running but he his
lone breakaway was run down with five laps to go.
Saidi-Sief took over the lead and gradually increased the pace before
kicking with 250m left, but he did not plan for Limo's close attentions.
Limo was an promptly thanked his teammates for ensuring his success.
"Coming here to Canada we decided it was time to get the Kenyans back to winning
races," said the 1998 Commonwealth 1500m bronze medallist, who won in a time of
13:00.77.
"So we sat down and planned how the race would be won."
"Kipketer took the lead. We wanted the race to be fast. The plan was to keep the
speed up and check later how we were feeling."
"I felt quite bad up to 2000m because of the pace. At 3000m I knew it would come
down to a sprint."
