Australia's Dmitriy Markov equalled the second-best vault ever seen to win the
pole vault with a clearance of 6.05m.
Markov, originally from Belarus but who was granted Australian citizenship
just over two years ago, set a championship and Commonwealth record as he moved
alongside Russia's Maksim Tarasov.
The 26-year-old failed with his three attempts at 6.10m, which only Ukraine's
legendary vaulter Sergey Bubka, who was among the crowd, has beaten.
Israel's Aleksandr Averbukh won the silver medal on countback with a clearance
of 5.85m from America's Nick Hysong.
Markov had almost gone out of the competition early on when he needed three
attempts to clear his opening height of 5.75.
But once he had gone over 5.85, Averbukh was forced to pass his remaining
two attmepts at 5.90 to keep his bid for gold alive.
Two more failures at 5.95 for the Israeli ended the contest and allowed
Markov to celebrate before setting the new record.
Markov, who admitted he was “a little worried” after missing 5.75 twice,
said: “I never expected to jump over 6m before the competition started, but
I'm very proud to have cleared 6.05m.
“Coming in I was a little worried because my foot was sore. I spent ten
hours yesterday and three hours today just icing it, but after what I did
today it feels much better.”
Averbukh said he wasn't surprised at Markov's record.
“I knew he is in shape and has the power to do that.
“I still think there will be many years and many competitions for me to
improve.”
