World record holder Osleidys Menendez continued her incredible season by
winning World Championship gold.
The 21-year-old Cuban star was far and away the best thrower in the final as
she sent the spear out to 69.53m – more than three metres better than
second-placed Mirela Manjani-Tzelili.
The Greek took silver with her effort of 65.78 with bronze going to
Menendez's team-mate Sonua Bisset who threw 64.69.
Menendez led the competition from her opening throw of 66.56 and never looked like being beaten.
The Cuban, who smashed the world record earlier this season when she threw 71.54 last month, dedicated the victory to her trainer and family.
Menendez, who became the youngest Cuban ever to win gold at the championships, said: “I threw well at the first attempt and after that I expected somebody to be closer to me.
“I am very happy and it is very nice to have two Cuban girls on the same podium and it's very good for the country.”
