Arvard Moncur of the Bahamas inherited the crown relinquished by Michael
Johnson in the men's 400m.
Moncur held on for victory down the final straight to win in 44.64 from
Germany's surprise package Ingo Schultz.
It is the first time in ten years that anyone apart from the American world
record holder has held the title.
Schultz's late burst saw him overtake Greg Haugton of Jamaica, many people's
favourite for the race. Schultz clocked 44.87 ad Haughton 44.98.
The Jamaican was almost caught on the line by American Antonio Pettigrew,
the 1991 world champion, but he took bronze in the photo finish.
Moncur revealed his motivation for winning was the agony of missing out on the Olympic final last yeart by just one hundreth of a second.
“I have a picture of the actual (photo) finish on my wall and use that as fuel for practice.
“Now I've made my dream a reality.
Moncur, who tried a variety of events including the shot put, high jump and sprints before falling in love with the 400m, admitted he didn't even know about Schultz until he saw him in the semi-finals on Sunday.
“Then I knew he was going to be someone I had to compete against. I thank him for helping me bring out the best in myself.
As for the future, Moncur said he could not hope to match Johnson's winning run.
“Michael Johnson has done a lot in the sport. I just wanted to come here and compete well. I don't think anybody can do the things he has done.
“This is my first step, winning my first individual gold medal. I'd like to think I'm on a roll and I look forward to other World Championships.”
Chess-playing violinist Schultz said: “Of course it's a big surprise. I came here to reach the semi-final, I can't believe it. I' still dreaming, waiting to wake up.”
