gold in the men's hammer.
The giant Pole broke Sergey Litvinov's 14-year-old record by 32cm with a
throw of 83.38m in the fifth round.
That pushed long-time leader Koji Murofushi of Japan into silver. His
second-round effort of 82.46 led until round five when Ziolkowski came up
with the goods.
Murofushi gave it his all as he attempted to hit straight back but could
only improve to 82.92. Then, with the last throw of the event, the Japanese
sent the hammer out over 80m once again and the crowd held its breath before
the scoreboard flashed up 82.61 and the gold went to Poland.
Russia's Ilya Konovalov took bronze with 80.27.
Ziolkowski said: It was very difficult to break the national record and to
overcome Murofushi, but today I felt like I gave it my best shot.
I am very tired after this fantastic competition and I can tell you that
winning the Olympic gold was much easier than winning here.
Murofushi paid tribute to his rival saying: I tried my hardest today but Mr
Ziolkowski was even better. I am proud to have been part of this
championship and to go home with a silver medal.
