Marion Jones
saw her four-year reign as the world's sprint queen ended in
sensational style as she was beaten into second place in the 100 metres in
Edmonton.
The American lost out as Ukraine's Zhanna Pintusevich-Block clocked the
fastest time in the world this year of 10.82 seconds.
Jones, who had been beaten in the 100m for the first time since 1997 in the
semi-final by the eventual new world champion, finished in 10.85 with Ekaterini
Thanou of Greece third in 10.91.
Olympic champion Jones said: "Obviously I am a bit disappointed but I am not a
sore loser and you have to give credit to Zhanna. She was the better performer
today."
Jones' defeat in the semi-final was a surprise but she was expected to respond
in the final, but never looked in gold medal contention from the opening
metres.
Pintusevich-Block's victory finally erased the bitter memories of the world
championships in Athens in 1997 when Jones won her first title.
The Ukranian through she had won a close race and had begun her lap of honour
when the scorebaord confirmed she had been beaten by just 0.02secs and she
dropped to her knees in despair.
Jones retained her crown in Seville in 1999 and had been expected to emulate
countryman Maurice Greene's hat-trick of 100m victories he achieved last night.
But those hopes were left in tatters in one of the biggest upsets in recent
sprint history. It was her first defeat in 42 finals.
``This is unbelievable,'' said Pintusevich-Block after taking 0.3secs off her
previous best. ``I have been running well this season, but you never know what
is going to happen when you come to a major championships.
``I thought I could beat Marion after the semi-final, but I knew that it was
still going to be difficult.''
