Yanina Korolchik set a new national record as she destroyed the field to win
gold in the women's shot.
The Belarus athlete launched the put out to 20.61m in the third round and
the effort proved enough to win the competition.
Nadine Kleinert-Schmitt of Germany took silver in a high-quality contest.
Attempting to overtake Korolchik, she stepped up in the final round to
record a distance of 19.86m, still some way short of victory.
The bronze went to Vita Pavlysh of Belarus whose 19.41 saw off the challenge
of Larisa Peleshenko by just 4cm.
Two-time world champion Astrid Kumbernuss, who has not hit top form this
season, could only finish sixth with 19.25.
Korolchik said she was “ecstatic” at winning gold.
Asked about her future, she added: “I am going to continue because I feel
there are lots of beautiful things to come.”
Kleinert-Schmitt was far from dejected. She said: “I won a silver medal in
the World Championships. I beat Astrid and improved my personal best – what
else can you ask for?”
