Competitors in the Wheelchair 1500m. By Andy Schooler, Sportinglife.com, Edmonton
There was more disappointment for Britain today at the Commonwealth Stadium
– in the media 800m event.
That’s because yours truly finished a disappointing 10th out of 13 - two of
whom didn't start - in his heat.
My time of two minutes 56.44 seconds was actually inside my target of three
minutes, and you have to remember the race took place in blazing noon sun,
oh, and that stadium is 700m above sea level where the air is so, so thin.
Oh well, at least the host country got some much-needed success as the
fastest women’s time was clocked by Megan Hazelwood, much to the delight of
her Canadian colleagues who were quick to point the fact at the post-race
‘press conference’ conducted by World Championship medallists Haile
Gebrselassie, Ruben Kosgei and Bernard Barmasai.
A bunch of hacks with a varying fitness being introduced to a non-existent
crowd and having their mugs plastered all over the scoreboard was a sight to
behold – and one I won’t forget in a long time.
The biggest crowd for a day’s action was in the Commonwealth Stadium tonight
and they cheered on the competitors in two specially-staged wheelchair
races.
Following on from blind and amputee races earlier this week, men competed
over 1500m with Aaron Gordian taking gold for Mexico, while the women’s 800m
saw Australia’s Louise Savage triumph.
Both races gave the crowd something to shout about as both were decided by
less than a fifth of a second.
