 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS DIARY DAY THREE

Edwards - unhappy with announcer. (Allsport)

By Andy Schooler, Sportinglife.com, Edmonton

One of the biggest cheers of the day went to athletes competing in the amputee races on Sunday afternoon.

Athletes, many of whom were at last year's Paralympics in Sydney, raced over 100 and 200m.

And as if to prove they really are a supreme sporting nation, Australia took gold in both events. The women's 100m was won by Amy Winters in 12.72 while the men's 200m went to Neil Fuller in 23.32.

BBC sports presenter John Inverdale doesn't come across as much of a wild man. But journalists who saw him strutting his stuff on a nightclub dancefloor in Edmonton can certainly vouch for his party-animal tendencies.

Jonathan Edwards gave the stadium announcer a bit of a blast for adding pressure to his triple jump competition.

However, noticeably the announcer was a Canadian and not his former British team-mate, hurdler John Ridgeon who is also on the public announcement team here.

Ever wondered how they get those opening and closing ceremonies so well correographed? Well, I found out tonight.

With the crowds long departed, the waving of flags could be seen under the floodlights in the Commonwealth Stadium.

I won't spoil next Sunday's surprise. Doubtless it will be as gripping as ever.
