 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS DIARY DAY TWO

By Andy Schooler, Sportinglife.com, Edmonton

I suspect readers of our site will know of ski jumper Eddie 'the Eagle' Edwards and many will remember swimmer Eric 'The Eel' at last year's Olympics.

But now the two have a contender for the crown of sportsman most out of his depth.

Something seemed a bit strange when no personal best time was pasted against Trevor Misapeka's name on the start list for the 100m.

Strange turned to fishy when he appeared on the start line - Trevor was 300lbs, that's more than 20 stone.

It was therefore no surprise to see his bulk blaze down the track to record a time of 14.28 seconds - a full five seconds away from setting a new world record.

To be fair to Trevor he had an explanation. He had arrived in Edmonton to compete in the shot putt, only to be told an automatic place held open for his country could not be taken in a field event.

So naturally he turned to the 100m and hopes his performance will be good enough for him to get a trial with an American Football team.

Perhaps we all should have known that Trevor, whose sister Lisa competes (if that's the right word, in the hammer later this week), would struggle when reading that start list.

For his country is none other than American Samoa, the Pacific island which plunged new depths in the football world earlier this year when they lost 36-0 to Australia.

Two Somalian athletes somehow were in Vancouver just hours before the start of the men's marathon - they thought it took place on Saturday!

A quick flight from British Colombia to Alberta, plus a police escort to the stadium saw them just make the start, but it was hardly worth it as both were forced out during the race.

Spare a thought for British hammer thrower Mick Jones.

Not only did his World Championships come to an end in the qualifying competition, but due to his early start he also had to miss the opening ceremony in front of a packed Commonwealth Stadium.

And now Jones must head straight back to Britain - for he is one athlete who also has a full-time job.
