Briton Mo Farah picked up a silver medal in the men's 5000m, losing out in a thrilling sprint finish to Jesus Espana.
Farah, one of the finds of the season for Britain, came into the race as the second fastest in Europe over the distance and didn't disappoint with only his Spanish rival proving too good in the end.
The first half of the race was painfully slow and with three and a half laps to go, the runners while still in a large group.
At that point Ireland's Alistair Cragg pushed the accelerator but only managed to tweak a muscle which forced him to quit the race.
Farah then hit the front as he pushed for home and he had managed to shake off all bar Espana with 200m remaining.
The Spaniard just had too much in the home straight, pipping Farah to the line by just nine hundreths of a second.
Farah said: "I'm only a little disappointed. I lost by a small margin and must be happy with the championships, the whole season and my progress.''
Espana's winning time was 13.44.70. His team-mate Juan Carlos Higuero won the bronze.
