Jo Pavey's medal bid ended in failure at the European Championships as she finished in an agonising fourth position in the 5000m.
Spain's Marta Domínguez retained her title with a devastating sprint finish down the home straight to deny pre-race favourite Liliya Shobukhova, of Russia, winning in a time of 14mins 56.18secs.
The Ethiopian-born Elvan Abeylegesse, now representing Turkey, claimed the bronze to deny Pavey.
After a slow start, Pavey, owner of the second fastest time in Europe this year, hit the front just over halfway to crank up the pace.
She shook off all bar the eventual medallists, but on the final lap all three of her rivals came past her down the back straight.
The 32-year-old had no answer to their faster finishes and had to settle for fourth in 15:01.41.
Pavey said: "I'm really disappointed not to get a medal - it's easy to look back, but I tried my best.
"I felt okay during the first part of the race and tried to take it on. In the end it wasn't enough.''
Ireland's Mary Cullen finished 12th in 15:25.80 but her team-mate Marie Davenport failed to finish.
