Tracey Morris, who went from rookie to competing at the Olympic Games two years ago, finished 16th in the European Championships marathon.

The race, held in wet and windy conditions, was won by Germany's Ulrike Maisch in a personal best of two hours 30minutes 01seconds.

Olivera Jevtic, of Serbia, was runner-up, clocking 2:30.27, with Russia's Irina Permitina third in 2:30.53.

Morris 38, who started at the back of the field then gradually moved through, posted a time of 2:37.34.

Morris said: "I had a bad stomach from the start and couldn't stay with the pace, which was frustrating. I felt much better in the last few miles."
